Dr. Fawzy George Estafanous, Retired Chairman of the Division of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation
Dr. Fawzy George Estafanous, age 84, Loving and devoted husband of Samiha for over 55 years. Dear father of Dr. Marc (Katherine) and Mr. John (Sharon). Cherished grandfather of Lucas, Rachel, Mary, Alexandra, and Matthew. Dear brother of Siham. Dear uncle of Dr. Ashraf Basali and Dr. Ayman Basali and many others. Beloved professor, mentor and friend of many in the Coptic and medical communities.
Dr. Fawzy was an accomplished physician, leader, and founder. At the Cleveland Clinic he was responsible for the creation of the world’s first cardiothoracic anesthesia department which he chaired prior to becoming chairman of the Division of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine until his retirement. He also served on the Clinic’s board of governors, and as its representative and board member for Dar Al Fouad hospital in Cairo.
As a physician and a leader Dr. Fawzy was instrumental in the development of the Anesthesia profession having served as the president of the Society of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, a world-renowned professor, researcher, and author of several anesthesia text books and countless publications. Through his love of Egypt, his native country, Dr. Fawzy supported many universities, medical schools and hospitals as an active professor and advisor. Most importantly, Dr. Fawzy served as a mentor and friend to several generations of young physicians entering the profession and throughout their careers.
Throughout his life and career Dr. Fawzy remained devoted to the Coptic Orthodox Church. His love of the Cleveland congregation and dedication to the local Church and community was apparent throughout his life and his efforts in support of St. Mark Church. Upon his retirement, Dr. Fawzy founded the St. Mark Foundation for Coptic History Studies in order to promote the study of the Coptic Church through various symposiums, conferences and publications. A humble servant of the Church, his contributions to documenting and preserving the Church’s history extended across borders and boundaries.
Dr. Fawzy George Estafanous served his life as a humble servant to his career, country, and community as well to his church and family. Please join us in the celebration of his extraordinary life.
