Great grandfather of Jack Strancar, Evie Laakso, Grace Laakso and baby Pinzone (due in March 2022).
Marijan (Marty) was born on February 16 th , 1924 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He and his seven siblings were raised in a loving household where the values of faith, family, and discipline were instilled, and which he then passed on to his children. After his infantry service in the Slovenian National Army he immigrated to Cleveland. He earned his undergraduate degree from Fenn College (later Cleveland State University) and began his career as a structural engineer in Northeast Ohio. His engineering talent is evidenced by the fact that his signature was on many projects and blueprints around the United Stated and other parts of the world. Perry’s Monument at Put-in-Bay, Wrigley Field in Chicago, and many of the MAC conference football stadiums are a few of the notable projects he worked on in his career.
He was a member of Assumption Church in Broadview Heights, a member of the Holy Name Society, and a regular volunteer during the annual Lenten fish fry. He was also the first President of Korotan, a Slovenian singing group in Cleveland.
Marijan was deeply committed to his faith and his Slovenian roots, making sure that everyone knew how important both were and always promoting traditions of his heritage. Holiday traditions were of the utmost importance and he made sure that Church activities were always a part of each celebration. One of his greatest joys was Nina’s cooking, which he declared was better than any restaurant meal, anywhere! While he didn’t stray much from the familiar vacation spots known to him, he saw to it that there was at least one, if not two, family vacations every year. The trips were always based on the outdoors as he loved the park systems and being outdoors hiking and swimming.
