Douglas R. Barker, affectionately known as Doug, passed away at the age of 72 on April 8, 2025. He was a devoted husband to Elizabeth “Betsy” Barker, sharing over 44 wonderful years together, nurturing a bond that was marked by love and companionship.
Doug was a cherished father to his son, Alec (Emily), who carries forward the values and teachings instilled in him by his father. He was the loving son of his late parents, Stonie and Eunice, and the son-in-law of his late in-laws, Robert and Florence Penman. In addition, Doug had a close relationship with his siblings and in-laws; he was a respected brother to Bev (deceased) (John) Baldwin and David, both of whom have passed, and embraced his role as a brother-in-law to Jan (Doug Gossman), Lee (Terry) Penman, Keith (PJ) Penman, David (Judy) Penman, Margaret (TJ) Emblidge, and William (Ev) Penman. Doug also took pride in being a dear uncle and friend to many fortunate enough to know him.
Throughout his life, Doug was known for his wide-ranging interests and hobbies. He had a passion for collecting coins and wines, which reflected his appreciation for both beauty and knowledge. He also found joy in photography, golfing, and reading—pursuits that enriched his life and those of the people around him.
From the moment his son first set foot on the wrestling mat in high school, he was his son’s biggest fan. His unwavering support and enthusiasm for the sport were evident at every match, where his cheers and encouragement could be heard from the stands. With a keen eye for the intricacies of wrestling, he understood the discipline, hard work, and dedication required to excel in this demanding sport.
As we reflect on the legacy of Douglas R. Barker, let us remember the love he shared, the laughter he brought, and the warmth he offered to those lucky enough to call him family and friend. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
