Martha Suljagic

Martha (Merich) Suljagic, age 91, wife of the late Ljubo Suljagic, passed away December 22. Preceded in death by her parents Michael and Mildred (Munas) Merich, brothers Michael, Nick and Rudy Merick, sisters Amelia Milanovich and Dorothy Merich, nephews Michael Merick and Martin Merick and niece Alicia Merick. While Martha had no children of her own, she cared deeply about her many nieces and nephews, cousins, godchildren and kumovi, whose activities and well-being remained of ongoing interest to her. Her survivors include nephews Bob Milanovich, the Very Reverend Rade Merick, Dr. Rudolph Merick and nieces Millicent Susens, Marilyn Merick, Donna Tudor, Janice Merick and Patricia Johnson. Martha was a longtime resident of Strongsville and Medina. She was born in Cleveland on January 5, 1924. She graduated from John Hay High School in 1942 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in History from Bowling Green State University in 1958. She earned her Masters of Arts Degree in 1960 from the School of Graduate Studies at Western Reserve University. She taught history at five Cleveland junior high and high schools – William Dean Howells, John Marshall, John Adams, John Hay and John F. Kennedy – from 1960 until her retirement in 1987. Martha was an active member of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Parma and of the Cathedral's Sveta Petka Kolo of Serbian Sisters, of which she was a past president.
